Pack Layers
At most of the lodges and reserves you will stay at during your trip, you will be treated to early morning or evening game drives. This is the time when it is coolest and easiest to spot animals on the plains and congregating around watering holes.
Although Africa can be very warm in the day time, early mornings and late evenings can get cold and the last thing you want is to be freezing while trying to enjoy the experience of being out in the wild. So always ensure you have layers on so you can heat up or cool off as needed.
Sun protection
The African sun can be fairly harsh especially if your skin isn’t used to it. Always remember to pack a sun hat or cap that you can wear for walking safaris, game drives or water activities. Sunscreen is also essential and you will want to keep it in a backpack while on your daily activities to ensure you can keep reapplying as needed.
Bug Spray
Being in the African wilderness, bugs sort of come with the territory. Most lodges have nets and citronella candles to try keep pesky mosquitos at bay but we recommend taking bug spray with you so you can apply it for your morning and evening excursions specifically.
Camera
This is going to be the holiday of a lifetime for you and your family and you don’t want to miss the opportunity to capture the moments. Your children’s face is going to be priceless the first time they see a mighty elephant or hear the powerful roar of a lion nearby.
Binoculars
Although you’ll be seeing a lot of animals up close and personal, there will also be times you’ll stumble upon animals grazing in the distance, a leopard in a nearby tree or a marvellous bird nesting above. Having your own binoculars will give you a better chance of getting a closer look before they decide to move.
Comfortable walking shoes
A lot of lodges offer walking safaris and you wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity because you didn’t bring the right shoes. We advise packing comfortable walking sandals as well as a good sturdy pair of close toed shoes.
