BOTSWANA > OKAVANGO DELTA
One of Africa’s most unique safari destinations, the Okavango Delta is a vast inland oasis where the Okavango River spreads into the Kalahari Desert, creating a constantly shifting landscape of waterways, islands and open floodplains.
Our Okavango Delta safari packages focus on the best of the region, combining carefully chosen bush camps with time in areas known for strong wildlife sightings.
What Makes the Okavango Special?
Water in the Desert
The defining feature of the Okavango is its water. Seasonal floods (between March and August) slowly fill the delta, turning dry land into a network of channels, lagoons and islands, creating a unique setting for both land and water-based safaris.
Exceptional Wildlife Diversity
The delta supports an incredible range of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards and wild dogs. It is also home to over 400 bird species and rare antelope such as red lechwe and sitatunga.
Pristine Wilderness
With limited development and low visitor numbers, the Okavango remains one of Africa’s most untouched ecosystems, providing a more remote and authentic safari experience.
What to Do in the Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is one of the most sought-after destinations for a Botswana safari, offering a very different experience to more traditional game reserves.
Activities include:
- Mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris through narrow channels
- Boat safaris for viewing wildlife from the water
- Guided game drives in areas with permanent dry land
- Walking safaris with experienced guides
- Birding and photographic safaris in diverse habitats
Best time to visit
June–October (dry season / flood season):
This is the most popular time to visit. Water levels are high, wildlife gathers around remaining dry areas, and game viewing is generally at its best.
November–March (green season):
The landscape becomes greener, birdlife increases, and many animals give birth. It’s quieter, and often better value, though some areas can be harder to access.
Family Safaris in the Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta can be an excellent destination for families, particularly those travelling with older children. It offers a rare chance to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other.
Many of our partner lodges offer:
- Family tents and suites
- Flexible activity schedules to suit your rhythm
- Private vehicles and guides for a more personal experience
- Safaris adapted for younger travellers
Because of the remote setting and water-based activities, some camps have age restrictions. We’ll guide you toward the options that best suit your family and how you prefer to travel.
