For malaria-free family safaris, we often recommend Madikwe, Pilanesberg and the Eastern Cape for their Big Five viewing, family-friendly lodges and easy logistics.

A safari should feel exciting, enriching and effortless, not something you need to worry your way through. While many safari destinations in Africa are malaria-risk areas, there are also exceptional reserves and national parks where you can experience incredible wildlife in recognised malaria-free areas.

For families with young children, travellers who prefer a more relaxed travel experience, or anyone wanting added reassurance, malaria-free safaris in South Africa offer the best of both worlds: unforgettable wildlife encounters with added peace of mind. You’ll still enjoy the same breathtaking landscapes, Big Five game viewing, world-class guides and unique wilderness experiences, without travelling in a malaria-risk area.

Why Choose a Malaria-Free Safari?

Peace of mind: Enjoy a safari in recognised malaria-free areas, particularly reassuring for families with younger children.

Perfect for children and multi-generational travel: These regions are some of the most family-friendly safari areas, with kids’ activities, child-friendly lodges and shorter travel distances.

Excellent Big Five wildlife viewing: South African malaria-free safaris, especially in regions like Madikwe, offer strong populations of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, as well as rare species like African wild dog.

Easy to combine with Cape Town, Winelands & the Garden Route: No need for complicated routing. Malaria-free safaris combine beautifully with South Africa’s most popular travel regions.

Where to Go for a Malaria-Free Safari

South Africa offers several malaria-free safari areas, but the best choice depends on how the safari fits into the rest of your trip.

Bordering Botswana, Madikwe is one of our most recommended malaria-free safari destinations for families. It offers excellent Big Five viewing, strong chances of seeing African wild dogs and a good selection of family-friendly lodges. Madikwe works particularly well for travellers starting or ending their trip in Johannesburg.

The Eastern Cape is particularly well suited to families combining safari with Cape Town and the Garden Route. Malaria-free private reserves such as Shamwari Private Game Reserve offer Big Five viewing, experienced guides and family-friendly lodge options, while fitting naturally at the end of a wider South African itinerary.

Pilanesberg is a convenient malaria-free option for travellers who want a shorter safari from Johannesburg. It offers Big Five wildlife viewing and works well for families who prefer easier logistics or do not have time for a longer safari stay.

Around three hours from Cape Town, Sanbona is a convenient option for travellers wanting to add a malaria-free Big Five safari to a Cape Town itinerary without flying to another part of the country. Its landscapes and private-reserve setting also make it suitable for a more relaxed safari stay.

Tswalu offers a very different malaria-free safari experience in the southern Kalahari. The reserve is known for its vast landscapes and unusual wildlife, including black-maned lions, pangolins, aardvarks and meerkats. It is particularly suited to travellers looking for a more remote and exclusive safari.

Madikwe is the better choice when the safari itself is the main event; the Eastern Cape is often better when safari is one component of a broader South African family holiday.

Which Malaria-Free Safari Area Is Right for You?

Our clients particularly value Madikwe for its guiding, wildlife variety, African wild dog sightings and family-friendly lodges. The Eastern Cape often receives positive feedback for its strong wildlife viewing, family-focused lodges and easy logistics at the end of a Garden Route trip. Pilanesberg is a popular choice when convenience and a shorter safari are priorities.

When to Go on a Malaria-Free Safari

In many of South Africa’s malaria-free safari regions, the dry season (May to August) is one of the best times for wildlife viewing. Clear skies, cooler temperatures and thinning vegetation make animals easier to spot at waterholes and along riverbeds.

However, the ideal time to visit varies slightly by region:

Malaria-free areas of Madikwe & Pilansberg (and KwaZulu-Natal & Limpopo)

  • Best between May and September, when conditions are dry and wildlife viewing is at its peak.

Cape Town, Western Cape & Eastern Cape (including Shamwari)

  • Malaria-free areas here are suitable to visit for much of the year, with dry and sunny conditions from September to April.

Southern Kalahari (Tswalu)

  • A year-round destination. Expect warm days and cool evenings between May and September, with excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings.

Choosing a Malaria-Free Safari with Children

For families with younger children, ‘malaria-free’ is only the starting point.

The lodge itself can make just as much difference to the family experience. A property may accept young children without necessarily being designed around families, so check minimum ages for game drives, family accommodation, mealtime flexibility and whether private safari vehicles are available.

We generally look for lodges that are genuinely family-friendly, with enough flexibility to adapt game drives and daily activities around younger travellers.

How Many Nights Do You Need?

For most families, three nights / four days is a good length for a malaria-free safari. It provides several opportunities for game drives without taking too much time away from the rest of a South African itinerary.

2 nights: Suitable for a short taste of safari, but can feel rushed once travel time is included.

3 nights: Our usual recommendation, with enough time for several game drives and some downtime at the lodge.

4 nights: Worth considering when safari is a major part of the holiday, particularly in Madikwe or a larger Eastern Cape reserve.
